Please join us for the inaugural Shape of the Region Conference, co-hosted by the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia and the Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce, will discuss and explore two big issues facing our region’s future as illuminated by data from the Community Foundation’s Opportunity Index.
1) Opportunity and Inequality
School-aged poverty continues to grow in Northern Virginia. If you are born in the bottom fifth of the economic spectrum, your chances of making it to the top fifth are less than 1 in 10. Where you are born on the ladder sets the table for where you’ll end up on the ladder. And if you didn’t finish high school, you’re chances drop to 1 in 100. What’s happened to the American Dream, and how does philanthropy help break down the barriers to economic and social mobility for our children and youth?
2) Tapping the Workforce Assets in Our Own Backyard
Northern Virginia hosts one of the largest business communities in the country. A strong economic region creates growth and prosperity for its residents and the companies headquartered there, as well as the entrepreneurial community. Today, there are thousands of open jobs in cybersecurity, tech, and other industry sectors in our region, which require some advanced skill and knowledge, but not necessarily an undergraduate degree. As employers, you have an opportunity to tap into an existing and rapidly growing local workforce base. Almost 50% of all children in Northern Virginia now live in immigrant families – either they or their parents were born abroad. What advantages does the diversity of our regional population provide to our global business community? How can the business community make better use of this local asset and workforce opportunity to help secure the continued economic vibrancy of the region?
